Why to escape religious persecution of course but nobody seems to get past that like just what religious persecution. In other words most people simply want to label religion persecution without finding out what was actually going on.
Their was an English king called Henry VIII who decided he wanted to divorce his queen, instead of his usual be-heading, but the Catholic church wouldn't let him do it so instead he decided to play god and invent his own church and get his divorce making this the only Church at the time that allowed divorce. He declared himself as head of this new church of England and any Englishman who refused to attend this church was called a traitor to the crown and was treated accordingly usually with the loss of his life. Of course this was something that continued for generations.
This break with the Catholic Church contributed to friction with Spain of course since they were the principle enforcers of the Catholic inquisition at the time making them quite a terror to the European Protestants at the time.
